An icon of New Zealand's fishing industry has been awarded Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Peter Talley is included in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to business and philanthropy.

As head of the Talley's Group based in Motueka, he's worked over his lifetime to promote the employment of locals in the fishing industry.

He was instrumental in the push to place Foriegn Charter Vessels under the control of New Zealand labour laws.

He's also support a range of local charities, including Moteuka Hospital, the WOW museum in Nelson, and Outward Bound.
