Taranaki iwi and environmental advocates are pleading with the Government, to stop all seabed mining in New Zealand.
A six thousand signature petition has just been delivered to Parliament, protesting a bid to mine iron sand on the South Taranaki Bight.
Kiwis Against Seabed Mining spokesman Phil McCabe said there is no safe way to carry out the mining.
"It's inherently destructive. It's not an activity that if something goes wrong, you've got a mess. As soon as you start, you're breaking stuff."
Green Party resources spokesperson Gareth Hughes greeted them, to receive the petition.
He said all they know about seabed mining is that it will have a bad effect.
"The uncertainties around the uncertainties are uncertain. That's the truth, because no one is doing it at their scale anywhere around the world."
