One Wellington suburb may see it's single train station moved to fix Lower Hutt's traffic problems.
The NZTA, Greater Wellington Regional and Hutt City Councils are looking at relocating Melling train station a quarter of a kilometre south as part of the flood resilience River Link plan.
Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace said there's no way the popular train station can stay where it is.
"Melling is the most congested intersection through State Highway 2, so when we do the doubt interchange that will have to be undertaken, and when that happens, the railway station will have to move."
Wallace said the plan would give more people the option of using public transport.
"We think there's a real opportunity with moving the Melling Station further south, gives us the opportunity to give people more chance from the central city for public transport."
The plan is out for consultation with the Greater Wellington Regional Council
