A person has been critically injured after a large brawl broke out in Ngāruawāhia.

A police spokesperson said two locations had been cordoned off after the fight which involved “several people”.

The spokesperson said they were called to Waipā Esplanade, near the intersection with Newton St, at 1.30pm.

They were then alerted to a critically injured person on Jordan St who was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

“There is a large police presence in the area, and cordons are in place at both scenes.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.”

Police are beginning their investigation into the brawl and the spokesperson said more information would be released “proactively”.
