Police have released the names of the two people who died following a two-vehicle crash near Temuka last week.

Benjamin Joseph Downes, 32, died in the crash on Milford Clandeboye Rd on January 22.

Shakana Ackroyd, 19, was critically injured and passed away in hospital two days later.

A police investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

“Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones at this time,” said a spokesperson.

Downes' family shared the news of his death on Facebook last week.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Ben’s passing,” the post said.

Downes' body would return to his home where people could visit and pay respects before a celebration of his life tomorrow.

“Your support and presence will be deeply appreciated as we honor his memory,” his family said.

Ackroyd was described as a “beautiful girl that was taken way too soon ”.
