Hundreds crowded the lawn in front of Parliament to protest against derogatory online comments made by Wellington College boys.

The Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett was among those gathered and commended the organisers and those who showed up to take a stand.

Fourteen-year-old Norma McLean was among those at the protest and said rape culture is prevalent, especially in online forums.

"Boys or young men talking about sexist things about raping a woman and how it's okay, but they don't use the word rape they say 'taking advantage of' or 'rooting'.

"And it's never okay to force yourself on young girls and it's never okay to joke about it either because that just encourages it."

Wellington East Girls' College student Salome Teklezgi it means so much to them that so many people turned up.

"I am very pleased about it. I'm lost for words. It's very emotional to see all of these people actually stood up for it."

Miss Teklezgi said they're so happy that people of all ages and genders showed up, especially some Wellington College boys.

"I was very happy that they [came] here and showed their support. They took time out of their day to make the signs and chant with us. It was just really nice."
