One person has been killed after a crash involving their car and another one carrying eight people near Whangarei.
All eight have been taken to hospital, with five of the eight people in the other car having moderate to serious injuries.
It happened on State Highway One at Puwera, at around 3am.
The person was the only one in their car.
State Highway one has been closed south of Whangarei.
