We will not spy on you.

John Key has reassured his German counterpart, Angela Merkel, following revelations she was spied on by the United States.

Dr Merkel offered a diplomatic answer, when asked if she was worried the GCSB might surveil her while in New Zealand today.

She told media she's aware New Zealand is part of the Five Eyes - but she says Germany also has close intelligence ties with the United States, although their opinions sometimes differ.

John Key said Angela Merkel has nothing to fear, and if he wants to know something, he'll just ask her.
