The road toll now stands at six after a person died in a crash between a car and a truck in the Selwyn District near Christchurch this afternoon.

An ambulance spokesman confirmed one person had died but was unable to release any further details.

The fire service also confirmed it attended the accident on Mitchells Rd, Bankside, near Christchurch shortly after midday.

A police spokeswoman would not divulge any other details.
