Hundreds of nudists from around the world are expected to arrive in Upper Hutt later in the year, to attend a meeting aimed at promoting naturism in New Zealand.

The Wellington Naturist Club will host the International Naturist Federation Congress in November marking the first time it's been held in New Zealand.

The three day event will give people from overseas the opportunity to travel around the country on tours and visit naturist destinations.

Club president Ken Mercer said Tourism New Zealand and the Upper Hutt City Council have helped them to promote the event, which will help to put naturism on the map in New Zealand.

"It's great promotion for New Zealand as a naturist destination because we've got a lot of clubs in New Zealand which are fantastic clubs with lots of people and lots of accommodation and lots of facilities to be used."

He said the congress is a way to promote New Zealand as a destination for naturists and the world.

"It could be up to 200 people coming from overseas and what we're hoping to get out of it is in fact extra tourism, extra people coming to New Zealand to visit naturist destinations within New Zealand, and we have a lot."
