New Zealand's birth rate is expected to fall below the level needed to sustain the population within the next 10 years.
Massey University population expert Paul Spoonley says we're already at the point where immigrants have overtaken births, in adding to the number of people in the country.
He says Caucasian and Asian women in particular are now having fewer children, much later in life.
