The Government is welcoming three new oil and gas companies wanting to explore in New Zealand.
Chevron, ONGC Videsh and New Endeavour Resources have been awarded exploration permits in this year's Block Offer.
Minister of Energy and Resources, Simon Bridges, says two of these companies are major international players, while one is a new local entrant.
He's awarded a total of 15 new on and offshore permits.
The Government's made 85 percent more land and sea available in this year's offer compared with last year.
However, not everyone is ecstatic at the news.
The Greens are voicing their disapproval of the Government's latest moves in the oil and gas sector.
Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman is irate one of the permits allows for exploratory drilling in deep water.
"Let's remember deep water horizon was an exploratory well in 1.5 km of water. They've just given a permit for a company to go ahead in 3km of water. It tells you the dangers that are involved."
