The Ministry for Primary Industries is making no apologies for stepping up the number of biosecurity fines issues at customs, which has almost doubled in the last 3 years.
Over 9000 biosecurity fines have been issued so far this year with MPI expecting another increase this year with a busy summer period yet to begin.
Officers issue 9704 fines last year, which has rapidly increased from 4851 in 2014.
"The rise is partly due to the increased numbers of visitors, but also to the tough stance we're taking on people that put New Zealand at risk. We're now more likely to issue a fine than give a warning," MPI passenger manager Craig Hughes says.
Hughes said the $400 fines were a stern reminder to those who unintentionally fail to declare biosecurity goods.
"Travellers should be aware that failing to declare because you forgot, were tired from travelling or did not know the rules is not enough to avoid a fine."
