Mitre 10 is the latest company to ditch single-use plastic bags.
It will remove them from its 81 Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores by the middle of next year.
And it's also doing away with plastic boot liners - sometimes used by garden centre customers to protect their cars from dirt and debris.
Mitre 10 CEO Neil Cowie says store owners have been overwhelmingly in support of the move to reduce the environmental impact of plastic bag waste, and all indications show this view is shared by customers.
Customers will be able to buy reusable bags, and a non-plastic boot liner alternative will be introduced in the coming months.
It follows a trend that has been put in place by supermarkets over the last month.Â
Countdown last month announced they will phase out plastic bags by the end of 2018, followed by New World, who will use give away reusable bags to customers.
Z-Energy will also phase out bags.
