Methane gas is being explored as one possible way to power new facilities on the old QE-two site.
Before the earthquakes, the site was powered by gas sucked from Burwood Landfill, through an underground pipeline.
Recreation and sports manager John Filsell thinks that could very well be what happens in the future, when the city's eastern recreation centre comes into fruition.
He says the council's commissioning an energy study to determine the best option.
"We've got to have energy, it's got to be reliable and it's got to meet the intended purpose of the site. There's got to be sustainability, there's got to be continuity of supply. There's an economic element."
Results from the study will be available in one month's time.
