UPDATED: 12.50PM A campground in a popular tourist spot has been closed to the public during the busy holiday period.

It follows a complaint over the alleged conduct of the campground manager.

The Matamata-Piako District Council launched an investigation after a woman visitor at Matamata Aerodrome campsite lodged the complaint.

Mayor Jan Barnes is not going into details, but said they are taking the matter seriously.

"We felt the safest and the best way to deal with it at this time is to allow the employment issue to work through and to close it to the public so that we can get to the point of the problem."

She said it's sad the incident is a blight on the operation, but emphasises the complaint laid has nothing to do with the camp ground or bunk rooms.
