Massey University staff are speaking to students after a building was twice vandalised with pro-Palestine messages.

Interior walls in the stairwell of Massey's Wellington campus fine arts block were covered in paint on June 14th by students protesting the university's refusal to take a stance on the war in Gaza.

The words "as appropriate for a university, Massey has not taken a single position of this issue" was among messages painted on the walls, a quote student protestors claim was provided by a Massey spokesperson regarding the conflict.

The Fine Arts block was then temporarily closed while the display was painted over by staff on June 15th.

More graffiti quickly reappeared, this time calling out the university for holding investments in Israeli government bonds.

It reads "you can't cover all the blood stains ... you can't hide Massey's investments in genocide."

A university spokesperson said Massey hasn't contacted police.

"Staff from the Fine Arts programme have been engaging with some of the students involved and conversations are currently taking place on how to productively move forward on this matter." the spokesperson said.

Regarding its investments, Massey insists isn’t aware of any active links to companies with ties to Israel but confirmed its trust holds Israeli Government Bonds.

Massey University Foundation has $64 million invested in managed funds. As of the end of April, $7,105 of this is invested in Israeli Government Bonds.

"Income from the Foundation’s investments supports student scholarships, academic positions and research at Massey."

"All three of the Foundation’s fund managers are signatories to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investment", the spokesperson said.
