Auckland Maritime Police are urging boaties to remember to wear lifejackets.

An operation this morning between North Head and Long Bay stopped around 20 vessels, most of which were following the law.

However, one or two were caught without lifejackets on, which police believe is too many.

Senior Constable Peter Comer said "not wearing a lifejacket is dangerous and unacceptable- especially with winds forecast of 25 knots.

"Even though the conditions are good, people can still drown.

"The other week when the same operation was conducted, around 50-percent of vessels didn't have lifejackets on board and that was worrying.

"We pull bodies out of the water of people who drown needlessly because they weren't wearing a lifejacket," he said.
