Hospitality New Zealand hopes Parliament will back a speedy law change to allow New Zealanders to watch the Rugby World Cup in bars.

England is hosting the 2015 Rugby World Cup, meaning many of the matches would be outside the liquor licence hours for most venues.

Act leader David Seymour is introducing legislation so operators won't have to jump through hoops to screen the early morning games.

Hospitality New Zealand's Bruce Robertson said they are delighted someone is seeing sense, so "the silly restrictions police were looking to impose might be subverted by a Bill allowing people to sensibly open, so that the public can come and do what they want to do, which is watch a rugby match."

He said the conditions being required by the police, such as ticket-only sales, fancy dress, live music, quizzes, guest speakers or themed food, would do nothing to reduce alcohol harm and will simply increase the costs of providing this service to the public.

"If Act's Bill is successful, venues opting to open and screen world cup matches would continue to have the strict conditions around the provision of food and intoxication they always have and the heavy penalties if they get it wrong."

He adds, "David Seymour's Bill is a pragmatic, sensible approach and we strongly support it."
