A jetskier who died at Acacia Bay on Sunday while saving his brother’s life was “a pillar of strength and joy” for his family.

Police divers recovered the body of Vincent “Vinnie” Cornell from Lake Taupō on Monday afternoon. He has not yet been formally identified.

According to a Givealittle page set up by his sister Sani Leota, Cornell’s last act was to give his life for his brother.

“[It was] a selfless and heroic act that speaks volumes about the man he was,” Leota said.

Leota said Cornell’s loss was “a massive shock”.

“Vinnie was an amazing and loving husband and father, who poured his heart and soul into his family.

“He was the pillar of strength and joy in their lives.”

Vincent Cornell went missing after an incident on Lake Taupō on Sunday.

Leota said Cornell “gave so much to so many beyond his own family” and was always the “first to step up”.

“His generosity, courage, and devotion to his family and friends will forever leave a legacy of love and kindness.”

Vincent is survived by his wife Ashleigh and four children Michael, Paris, Cleo and Jasmine. The Givealittle page was set up to support the family’s living expenses, funeral costs, food and mortgage payments.

“Please give if you can, to help ease their burden during this difficult time,” Leota said.

“Let’s honour Vinnie’s memory by coming together as a community, just as he always did for us.”

Police said the Police Dive Squad located the body on Monday afternoon.

“Police offer condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” a police statement said.

“We wish to thank all involved in the search including members of the public, Harbourmaster and Coastguard, and to thank Tuwharetoa Māori Trust Board and local hapū who assisted whānau during the search.”

Cornell’s death has been referred to the Coroner.

A rāhui will remain in place in the Nukuhau/Acacia Bay area of the lake for the next few days.
