A recent spate of shoddy buildings in Auckland is being put down to the number of new builders with a lack of experience.
Auckland Council has made complaints about dozens of homes, including one so badly built it may have be torn down.
The city's property crisis has led to a sudden demand for building work, all happening at the same time.
Auckland Council building control manager Ian McCormick said this has resulted in an influx of new staff.
Mr McCormick said these new staff “need more supervision than they are currently getting at the moment”.
The issue has also thrown a light on the Government’s Rules Reduction Taskforce which recommended allowing some qualified builders to certify their own work. The recommendation was one of several made by the taskforce seeking to reduce compliance costs.
McCormick suggested self-certifying builders might be easier said than done.
“How do you identify the people that are competent to be able to do certain types of work and what systems do you put in place,” he asked
McCormick said any self-certification system would have be very well designed, but in the mean time the council is working with the sector to life standards.
