A multi agency approach is seen as the answer to getting freedom camping under control in Kaikoura.
Freedom camping was a big issue in the district last summer so the Kaikoura District Council is putting together a 'responsible camping' working group to address the problem.
With over one hundred kilometres of coast line the council says it will need the support of other agencies to make everything work.
Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray says he wants to involve representatives from the Department of Conservation and LINZ.
"It may mean there will be some controlling of areas and physical work on the grounds and toilets if we get them on time, so it is in specific areas"
He says they don't want to destroy that opportunity for the kiwi camper, surfer or hunter, but they have to be responsible for the public.
