The Prime Minister said New Zealand has lost a towering figure, with the death of Jim Anderton at the age of 79.
Jacinda Ardern has been talking to reporters at her home in Auckland, after hearing of Mr Anderton's death in Christchurch overnight.
She also acknowledged Mr Anderton as someone who stood up for his principles, and the people he represented.
Ms Ardern said Jim Anderton was a man of deeply-held values and ideals, who was practical and compassionate.
