The Defence Force will launch an investigation to find out how a soldier received burns to his back from an open fire.
The man was flown to Hutt Hospital for treatment after the incident yesterday morning.
The Defence Force has confirmed the incident happened during a training exercise in Waiouru, but won't comment further.
