Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman said the extra workers are vital to the continued prosperity of the industry.
"They don't add to the population of New Zealand - what they do add to New Zealand is they add to our production and our growth, so they're very valuable."
Chapman said with more seasonal workers coming, it means there is likely to be an increase in permanent positions for New Zealanders.
"You have the ability to use these workers to deal with peak flows of work, and because you can do that, the whole industry we're working in is growing."
New Zealand Winegrowers says the extra workers allowed into the country will ease of some of the pressure of the huge demand for labour in the industry.
Spokesman Jeffrey Clarke said there will be a big need for workers in Marlborough vineyards in particular.
He said the industry relies on the seasonal workers to provide labour needed to manage vintage and pruning.
Clarke said it's quite important for the industry and a welcome increase.
