Police believe the man on the run after escaping custody in TaupÅ is getting help to avoid capture.
Samir Derek Belhajjam, 30, fled from a police transport vehicle that was at the TaupÅ District Court building on Story Place on Monday.
Belhajjam was being transported back to prison after a court appearance when he managed to evade his police escort.
TaupÅ Area Commander Inspector Phil Edwards said they continued to ask for the publicâs help to find him.
âHe has known associates in TaupÅ and is possibly receiving assistance to avoid police. He has also previously been known to sleep rough and unlawfully access boats and/or properties.â

Edwards said inquiries into how this happened were ongoing and police would conduct a full review of the incident.
âAt this stage we can say there were no concerns about staffing levels at the time.
âOur priority at this time is locating Belhajjam and returning him to custody.â
âIf you have noticed anything out of place on your property, or have any information that might help us locate him, we urge you to get in touch by calling 111.â
A police spokesperson told the Herald that Belhajjam is facing charges relating to alleged wilful damage and dishonesty offending.
âHe also now faces a charge of escaping from police custody,â they said.
He was being remanded in custody after an appearance in court on Monday.
âHe was wearing green prison-issue shorts and T-shirt, along with an orange high-vis vest,â a police spokesperson said.
âResidents may notice an increased police presence as staff work to locate him.â
