The HMNZS Canterbury is to be sent to Vanuatu for post Cyclone Pam aid and recovery.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee made the announcement this afternoon.

He says the multi-role vessel will be leaving as soon as possible carrying personnel, heavy engineering equipment, and other supplies.

"The Canterbury will have quite a considerable amount of facility on it that will be useful.

"I'll point out to the House that we are working with the Vanuatu government and responding to their requests."

The Australian Navy is also loading the HMAS Tobruk with aid for Vanuatu.

The French Navy is sending the frigate Vendemiaire from New Caledonia.
