The Hawke’s Bay chapter of a motorcycle club has paid tribute to its former president who was killed while “doing what he loved” in a crash at the weekend.

Policehave named 68-year-old Mark David Macaulay as the motorcyclist who was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Bunnythorpe, near Palmerston North, on Sunday, January 12.

Emergency services responded to the crash on Colyton Rd about 2.55pm. Two others were in a moderate condition following the incident and a third suffered minor injuries.

In a social media post on Sunday night, motorcycle club Ulysses Hawke’s Bay informed members that Macaulay had died in the incident, which occurred while returning from a planned Sunday ride.

“We have lost a staunch member of our Ulysses family and a friend to many in the branch and also other branches around the country and clubs in the Bay. He will be remembered for his dedication to the role of branch president and also to the committee,” the post read.

A Givealittle fundraiser set up for Macaulay’s family on Wednesday said he died “while doing what he loved – riding his motorcycle with fellow members of his cherished motorcycle club”.

“Mac was not only passionate about riding but also dedicated to promoting rider safety and awareness. He mentored many, helping them grow into confident and responsible motorcyclists.”

The fundraiser said his passing had left a profound void in the lives of his children.

“Your contributions will help ease the burden on his family as they navigate this painful journey and ensure that Mac receives the heartfelt farewell he deserves.”
