A popular brand of shaved ham is being recalled for fears it may contain listeria.
Consumer New Zealand says Premier Beehive NZ Ltd is recalling Beehive Shaved Champagne Ham (200g Family Pack) because it may contain the genus of bacteria known as listeria.
"The product was sold in 200g plastic packs at Countdown, New World, Pak 'n Save and Fresh Choice stores throughout the North Island," Consumer NZ reported.
"It has a use-by date of 26 Jan 2016 and batch number 335322."
Food contaminated with listeria can cause serious illness, even if it does not appear or smell unusual.
Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, ongoing fever, severe headaches and neck stiffness.
Those most at risk include the elderly, people with weak immune systems, pregnant women and newborns.
Consumer NZ said the affected product should not be eaten and customers are urged to return it to their retailer for a full refund.
They can also phone 0800 506 701 with any queries.
There have been no reports of illness, but Consumer NZ said anyone concerned about their health should seek medical advice.
