Greenpeace is calling on the Government to take action on noxious microbeads.

Microbeads are tiny plastic particles which are often found in personal care products such as toothpaste, face wash and shower scrubs.

Greenpeace campaigner Sarah Yates said the beads can cause serious health problems in marine life.

"They go into the fish food cycle, and some smaller fish are actually starting to choose micro-plastics over their own food, and it's getting into the whole food chain."

Sarah Yates says recent research indicates microbeads could be making their way into table salt, meaning humans are consuming them as well.

She believes the Government needs to act.

"These microbeads are getting into our ocean and the Government needs to have a blanket ban on them.

"They're totally unnecessary and wasteful," she added.
