The icon that made Paeroa famous turns 50 today.

The big L & P bottle marks the birthplace of the drink and has become one of the most photographed landmarks in New Zealand.

It hasn't all been smooth sailing - the bottle was originally installed right by State Highway 2 meaning people would stand on the highway to have their picture before shifting to it's current location.

Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga says it's well loved and has stood the test of time.

"It's still looking quite spic and span, and I'm quite confident that's going to be an icon for New Zealand for many years yet, probably another 50."

To mark the occasion the town's putting on a party in the park.
