There are calls to reduce the speed limit around schools further, following an accident that's left a Canterbury 14-year-old fighting for this life.
Currently, the road code states drivers around schools must slow to 40 kilometres per hour in peak times, and 20 kilometres when passing a school bus.
But NZ School Speeds spokeswoman Lucinda Rees says speeds need to be slower, and the rules simplified to ensure drivers know their responsibilities.
"Maximum 30 kilometres per hour, which is what the World Health Organisation recommends during peak time, and no more than 60 kmp/h at all other times of the day, because otherwise people get the message but it doesn't matter."
