Fresh calls for govt inquiry into RMA

An environmental campaigner who rose to prominence by climbing a kauri tree to stop it from being axed says the Government needs to do more to protect our native species.

Environmental campaigner Michael Tavares gained public support when he climbed the tree in early March.

He's calling for a commission of inquiry into the RMA.

"There's a blatant feeling that things aren't as they should be, otherwise I wouldn't have had all the attention and support that came from that. It really touches something in the national ethos. I think our government would be smart to address this."

Meanwhile, the ACT Party says a commission of inquiry into the Resource Management Act would waste taxpayer money, when Parliament can step up and make changes itself..

Seymour believes that, because Mr Tavares broke the law in climbing a tree to prevent it being felled, he shouldn't be listened to.

"This guy is a thug and a trespasser who does not respect the rule of law, and it's ironiuc that he is the one calling for law changes.

"We don't need a commission of enquiry. What we need is a parliament with the guts to reform the RMA."
