Updated 2.08pm: The formal process by which people can have their say on which flag could represent New Zealand has begun.
Kiwis will be able to look at designs and have their say online. Roadshow community meetings and hui will be held across the country.
Flag Consideration Panel chair Emeritus Professor John Burrows says whether people vote to change the flag or not, it's the first time they've had the opportunity to discuss options.
"Flags are, or should be, things that inspire and motivate us," he said, asking for Kiwis to consider "what to you is really special about New Zealand."
Sir Brian Lochore is on the Flag Consideration panel, tasked with engaging with the country about what they want from a flag, and choosing four designs for referendum.
He says people should keep an open mind, and have a look.
"If they don't want to change, they don't have to change. There's no compulsion about this. But we've never had the opportunity in 150 years of people actually being able to decide."
Anyone can attend a community workshop, and they can join the conversation online at standfor.co.nz .
A referendum will be held in November, where voters will be asked to rank the shortlist of four flag alternatives.
