UPDATED 11.44am: An Anglican church in Wellington is doing its part to support the intake of Syrian refugees.
St Peters on Willis has erected signs saying 'refugees welcome here' and is working with the Red Cross to do what it can to help settle the new residents.
Vicar Reverend Brian Dawson said it's of no concern to the church that the majority of refugees follow the Muslim religion.
"This isn't about Christians, Muslims or Jews, this is about humans, and the crisis is no respecter of religious denomination."
The Red Cross is impressed by New Zealanders welcoming attitude towards the Syrian refugees.
The first of the six hundred strong special refugee intake have begun arriving.
National programme development manager Rachel O'Connor said they've been overwhelmed by people wanting to volunteer and donate goods.
"We're really excited that when the families arrive in the community that that's the type of welcome that they are going to get."
The Red Cross is also asking employers to consider taking on refugees.
O'Connor said a job is an important part of the resettlement process.
"Getting a first job in New Zealand is absolutely the best way to rebuild your life here, it gives you financial independence and gives you a chance to use your skills and give back to the community."
