Three fire appliances will remain at the scene of Napier's Poraiti fire over night.
Around 60 officers from around the Hawke's Bay were battling the blaze which broke at around half past one.
It engulfed about 100 hectares and a handful of residents had to be evacuated.
Regional fire commander Chris Nicoll said they're operation is scaling down now.
"We'll be leaving three appliances here overnight until we're quite satisfied and quite comfortable that there is no chance of any further fire."
"There are quite a few small hot spots in some of the gullies and the ground crews are currently dampening those down."
Mr Nicoll said a fire investigation team will be on the scene tomorrow to try and determine the cause of the fire.
