The house fire that killed a Hamilton preschooler is believed to have been caused by a novelty lighter.

Fire-investigators believe the fire, on Sunday, was caused by children playing with a lighter shaped like a gun - and they want them banned.

Other novelty lighters look like cartoon characters, animals, toys, cars, food and watches.

Such lighters are already banned in Australia, Europe and the United States.
