Facebook causes Napier party chaos

Police will this week be speaking to a young man who organised through Facebook a party which got out of control in Napier.

Officers spent nearly three hours on Saturday night closing down the party in Rutherford Street after it attracted more than 500 young people, resulting in street brawls and damage to neighbouring properties and cars.

Police arrested 15 adults and five juveniles for disorderly behaviour and assaulting police.

The party was organised by 20 year old Thomas MacDonald, who has organised similar events in the past.

Inspector Hirone Waretini says despite Mr MacDonald claiming it was an 'invite only' event, the news spread like wildfire.

He says the fact he was charging an entry fee, providing alcohol and employing security guards put the event in a different category where liquor licensing and health and safety laws were applicable.
