Extensive measures are being used to keep the public out of the danger zone when the country's first ever commercial space rocket is launched.

A 12-nautical-mile exclusion zone is in place in the sea around Mahia Peninsula for all vessels, swimmers and fishing people when Rocket Lab attempts to launch its Electron rocket.

From Monday, the rocket could launch on any day over a 10-day period from the site in northern Hawke's Bay.

The company won't pin-point the exact launch day and time, as it's too weather-dependent.

Hawke's Bay Regional harbour-master Martin Moore said the exclusion zone will be closely monitored for stray vessels.

"Regional council will have staff a float. There will be a spotter aircraft up. Also Rocket Lab have an extensive radar coverage of the area to keep the general public out of that danger zone."

Mr Moore is urging the public not to head out to sea to try watch the launch of the rocket.

He said the exclusion zones are often used to keep people away from harm.

"More often that not it's so the event can take place unhindered but in this case the overriding thing is the safety of the public."
