EQC head not convinced about insurance change proposal

The head of EQC isn't quite convinced by a proposal to change the way insurers handle claims, next time a disaster strikes.

The Insurance Council is proposing some big changes to the Earthquake Commission Act including a suggestion that private insurers take the lead on all earthquake claims in the future.

EQC chief executive Ian Simpson said it's an interesting proposition.

"I think we agree we need to share the resources better, however, lets' be clear: if they took over all the claims it would meant each insurer is be handling six times the load they took on from Canterbury," said Mr Simpson.

"It's a big ask."

Mr Simpson would also like to know how the proposal would work.

"There's got to be a payment for this services... so we'll have to understand that and at the end of the day 85 per cent of the claims are within EQC's cap, so we'll have a bunch or organisations spending government money."
