The public's being called on to help DOC care for increasing numbers of weak and emaciated fur seals.
Over winter the Department of Conservation received more seal call outs than usual.
Marine advisor Laura Boren says while skinny seal pups often venture onto land at this time of year, there's been a rise in the number showing up ... and in very thin condition.
If anyone spots very skinny seals they're asked to leave them alone ... but contact DOC.
"That's going to be a very hollowed out face, and shoulders and hip bones protruding, stuff like that in high numbers."
The rise in number of emaciated fur seals has sparked a plea from Boren for dog owners to be aware.
"Be aware that there are going to be vulnerable seals on shore, and if you are walking a dog keep them on a leash. Make sure they're under control."
If a dog attacks a seal, its owner could be jailed for up to two years or fined as much as $250,000, and the dog could be destroyed.
