Dunedin college sent into lockdown, armed police search nearby

Bayfield High School, in Dunedin’s Anderson’s Bay, is currently in lockdown after a threatening email was sent to the school. 

Armed police are currently escorting students from the school in groups of four as they work to establish the origin of the correspondence. 

An email from the school principal around 8.35am to parents said the school was in lockdown effective immediately, and all students would remain on site.

“Please keep your son or daughter at home if they have not left for school yet.” 

A similar message was posted to the school’s website and social media page. 

This morning around four police officers could be seen at the front of the school, with others patrolling the surrounding area. 

Armed police could be seen turning parents who had turned up outside the school. 

Around 50 parents were gathered outside the school, with small groups of students seen being escorted off the school grounds to the crowd waiting outside.

Police confirmed they were making enquiries into a threatening email sent to the school this morning. 

“We were alerted to the incident at around 8.17am this morning. 

Police are working to establish the origin of the correspondence,” a spokesperson said. 

Cordons were in place and a visible [police presence would remain in the area while enquiries were ongoing. 

A person at the scene said an alarm was going off, and a group of people had gathered at a nearby crossing.
