Shakti women's refuge says culture and religion is no excuse for violence against women.
A wife beaten by her husband with a cricket bat has failed in her plea to have him return home to her.
Daljit Singh has been sentenced at the High Court in Auckland to three and a half years in jail following the attack in their home last year.
His wife, who has name suppression, told the court her husband's actions were her fault.
Shakti spokeswoman Sara Chin says that's something they come across quite often.
"We often see culture, religion and tradition being used as an excuse to justify violence against women and children" she said. "To a certain degree, women then start internalising it, perceiving that perhaps it is part of their role."
During the sentencing Mr Singh told the court he made a huge mistake due to anger and Indian mentality.
But Sara Chin argues that's not good enough.
"Some people will misguidedly use culture to justify that, saying this is just our way of life. That's definitely not true, culture can be no excuse for abuse."
"So that cannot continue to be a reason to be violent towards our women and children."
