State Highway 2 in the Aongatete area of the western Bay of Plenty has been blocked by a road crash that happened just before two this afternoon.

It's near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Morton Road.

A car hit a power pole and there are live powerlines causing the highway blockage in both directions.

The closure will last a few hours and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Emergency services are working to get the road reopened.
