The Taxpayer Union's CEO is suing the former Conservative Party leader for defamation in the High Court at Auckland.

The case centres around Colin Craig's former press secretary, Rachel MacGregor, and her allegations that Mr Craig sexually harassed her.

She confided in Mr Williams but urged him to keep it private.

In his closing address, William's lawyer Peter McKnight said it was an extremely difficult choice to go public.

"An ethical dilemma, and what a dilemma, should he do nothing, but if he did that, then what would stop Colin Craig continuing to misrepresent his settlement agreement with Rachel."

Mr McKnight told the jury that Mr Craig's allegation that Ms MacGregor was also inappropriate is nonsense.

"In Rachel's words, there was never a sexual relationship, nor was there consent for his inappropriate actions."

Mr McKnight reminded the jury of Ms MacGregor's characterisation of Mr Craig.

"She said he was dodgy, manipulative, a liar, untrustworthy, mistreats people, is a hypocrite," he said.

Earlier in the trial, Mr Craig said he can't have defamed Mr Williams because his reputation was already damaged.

But Mr McKnight said that simply wasn't right.

"Mr Craig has said to you that Jordan Williams has a bad reputation. What a horrible thing to say. Mr Williams did not defame Mr Craig, but in fact exposed him."

Meanwhile, Colin Craig's lawyers have told the jury that his relationship with Rachel MacGregor was far more complicated that originally thought.

In his closing address, Mr Craig's lawyer, Stephen Mills QC, said the evidence clearly showed there was more to the relationship than meets the eye.

"It's hard not to feel some sympathy for her, even though you might well have concluded in light of all the evidence that's been heard that the relationship between her and Mr Craig was far more complicated and far more affectionate than she is now claiming."
