Closure for a Wellington family, close to 30 years after their much-loved father and grandfather first went missing.
Seventy-six year-old John Smith went missing in March 1986.
In February this year human remains were found in a bush-covered gully near Captain Edward Daniel Drive in Ngaio.
DNA testing confirms the remains are that of Smith.
Stafford Smith, John's son, said in a statement the find brings closure for the family and enables them to finally lay him to rest.
A private cremation and family service will be held at a later date.
