Residents of Christchurch's Port Hills are fed up with the noise and mess from boy racers.
They say the problem is the worst it’s been since the earthquakes.
They want a section of the Summit Road and Worsleys Road closed to the public between 10pm and 5am every week from Thursday to Sunday, to deter racing meets.
Governor’s Bay resident Rosie Belton said the problem went away briefly after the quakes, but unfortunately it has revved up again.
"Of course it would be great if it was a week long, but I think the initial idea of the Thursday, Friday Saturday night is so so much better than nothing."
Ms Belton said for almost a decade, the racing meets have damaged fences, scared stock and left tyre marks all over the roads in the Port Hills.
"It's absolutely shameful, these beautiful areas are ruined. There's bits of rubber, there's tyre marks, rubbish and just general utter disregard."
Chairman of the Summit Road Advisory Committee Paul Loughton said the entire city is bearing the cost of the damage to the road.
He said burnouts and tyre marks are a problem, as well as graffiti, damaged signs and rubbish dumping.
The proposal’s open for public consultation under the Christchurch City Council.
