A three-year project to restore one of Christchurch's most loved icons is on track and on budget.

The $127.5 million project to repair the Christchurch Town Hall is one year into the three-year project.

1100 concrete columns have been made for an earthquake resistant underground wall.

Up to 300 workers are expected to work on the project, which is expected to finish in mid-2018.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel, who recently visited the site, said the amount of work going on is unbelievable.

“I’ve been watching it from the outside, but it is even more unbelievable from the inside,’’ Mayor Dalziel says.

“People have so many memories of coming to the Town Hall for graduation ceremonies, concerts and all sorts of different events. This really is the living room of our city and it is something we have truly missed.’’
