It’s lucky no one was killed after a car sped through a red light, narrowly missed another vehicle and filled an intersection with smoke, a witness said.

Jared Gibbs, who works at Mayne Automotive in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga, captured the incident on video this afternoon.

He said he heard the car before he saw it.

“There was just a big cloud going through the traffic lights, a cloud of smoke.

“It was a pretty near miss, and everyone just stopped for about five seconds and watched while he went through the lights.”

The video shows another vehicle only just exiting the intersection as the white car races through.

It was lucky no one was hit and killed, Jared said.

“There’s a big skid mark straight outside our workshop.”

Jared’s mum Doreen Gibbs was reporting the incident to police when the Herald called the workshop.

She had earlier posted about the incident on a community Facebook page, asking if anyone could identify the “brainless” driver.

“He needs to lose his licence. This could have been your family, friends or loved ones. Thank God he didn’t hit anyone.

“I will be contacting the police now. This has just happened. Please stay safe. I’m absolutely gobsmacked with tears to think that could have been you.”

Doreen encouraged people to drive safely.

“We want to make sure we get home to our family. He locked up 200-300m [and] sailed through the red light at speed.”

A police spokesman did not have details of the incident yet but urged anyone with concerns about dangerous driving to report any incident immediately via 111 if it’s currently happening or 105 after the fact.
