It's feline frenzy at the Canterbury SPCA as an influx of kittens is putting the pressure on.

The organisation is asking the public to lend a helping hand, as it tries to provide care for its animals in the height of kitten season.

Around 600 kittens have been cared for by the SPCA over the past year, most of them in the recent summer months.

CEO Barry Helem said the organisation is struggling to feed them all.

"We are always looking for wet kitten food if anyone would like to donate that to us, and also blankets and sheets are a steady staple for us at this time of year as well."

Mr Helem said around 80 percent of the kittens that come into the care of the SPCA are sick, either with cat flu or are too young and vulnerable to be re-homed.
